Star Flower & Earth Vortex

Star Flower & dirt Vortex Paintings

In the Starflowers series, the view is toward the sky and stars as seen from Earth. The flowing paint creates layers of gaseous plumes, like petals, and I imagine the basic elements of life being scattered by dying stars, to be recombined to give birth to new stars. The Dirt Vortex series is related to the Starflower paintings. Earth is seen as particles of elements discarded from dying stars (stardust). My paintings of earth-formed spirals are Earth’s responses to the activity of the cosmos. I often incorporate clay into the paint, gathering it from places of personal significance. The swirlcross may symbolize the whirlpool movement of creation power or life forces in the beneath world. I use the green dots to symbolize elemental particles or seeds of new life emitting from this creative power.

    Both flower and star are similar:
    A flower is a star on earth;
    A star is a flower in the sky.
    Both at first are lonely:
    One star in a valley of blackness;
    One flower in a sea of green;
    Then others come up.
    Both are created by someone above:
    The star with its golden rays,
    The flower with its golden petals.
